What carrageenan is
Carrageenan is a thickener made from red seaweed. It helps gravy and pâté hold together. It is allowed in pet food, and some owners prefer to avoid it.
We don't take a side on it. We read every ingredient list and show which cans have it, so you can choose.
Brands differ a lot. 130 of the 703 meals we read list it, and most of those come from a few brands. Check the chart below before you buy a whole case.
The 20 cheapest meals without carrageenan per day
Meals the maker states are complete and balanced, for adult cats, with no carrageenan in the ingredient list. At most 4 per brand. Compare all 724 meals in the wet cat food finder.
Carbs and protein are shares of the food once the water is taken out, so cans and pouches compare fairly. Lab = from the brand's own lab test; the rest are estimates from the label, which run low for very meaty cans. Cost per day = what a 10 lb adult cat eating only this food would cost.
