Why Fancy Feast is a sound choice
- Every recipe is a complete meal. All 41 labels we read say the food is formulated to meet AAFCO's nutrient profiles for cats: 19 for all life stages, 20 for adults and 2 for kittens.6
- Protein is high once the water is out. Labels list protein as a small number, 8 to 14%, because the food is mostly water. Take the water out and these recipes are 41 to 61% protein.7
- Some pâtés are low in carbs. Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Pâté in Gravy is 4%. The Classic Pâté pack we price is 9 to 10%, and Classic Pâtés vary by recipe. See the lowest-carb meals.
Each Fancy Feast line, by the numbers
The 10 lines we have Purina labels for, lowest carbs first. Petites are left out: each tray is two servings, so its numbers don't compare.
Carbs and protein are shares of the food once the water is taken out, so cans and pouches compare fairly. Lab = from the brand's own lab test; the rest are estimates from the label, which run low for very meaty cans. Cost per day = what a 10 lb adult cat eating only this food would cost.

The trade-offs
Small cans add up. A 3 oz can holds about 92 calories, so a 10 lb cat needs about 2.8 cans a day. That's why cost per day ($2.69) matters more than the pack price. Compare it with the cheapest wet cat food per day, or with Sheba's smaller trays in Sheba vs Fancy Feast.5
Most recipes use meat by-products (35 of 41 labels list them), and 18 list "artificial and natural flavors." Both are allowed in complete cat food. The Gourmet Naturals line lists neither.
The chunks-in-gravy lines carry more carbs. Gravy Lovers, Grilled, Flaked and Sliced recipes run 12 to 22% carbs. If your cat is overweight or your vet wants fewer carbs, choose a pâté.
It isn't a vet diet. For kidney disease, diabetes or urinary problems, ask your vet. Purina doesn't publish phosphorus for most Fancy Feast recipes.
Fancy Feast for kittens and seniors
Kittens. 19 Fancy Feast recipes are labeled for all life stages, which covers kittens, and 2 are kitten recipes. Any recipe labeled "all life stages" or "growth" is complete for a kitten. See the best wet food for kittens.
Seniors. The Classic Pâté Senior 7+ line has 3 recipes at 3 to 12% carbs. For an older cat with kidney disease, ask your vet, since Purina doesn't publish phosphorus for these cans.
