What makes one can higher in carbs than another
- Texture. The typical pâté is about 6% carbs, shreds in broth about 4%, and chunks in gravy about 13%. 269 of the 311 chunks-in-gravy meals list wheat gluten, starch or flour. See the best pâté wet cat food.
- Grain. Meals with rice, wheat, corn, oats or barley in the ingredients run about 14% carbs, against 6% for grain-free ones. Some grain-free meals still run high on other starches; see grain-free wet cat food.
- Brand. By brand, the typical meal runs from under 1% (Tiki Cat, label estimate) to 29% (Hill's Science Diet), by Hill's own published numbers.4
Label math reads carbs low
Labels don't list carbs. The usual estimate is 100 minus protein, fat, fiber, water and ash. But the label gives protein and fat as minimums and water as a maximum, so for meaty cans the estimate lands near zero.
3 brands publish lab tests for enough of the same meals to measure the error. Lab carbs run 1.2 to 6.7 points above the label math, depending on the brand.5–7

How to work out the carbs on any can
Take Fancy Feast Classic Tender Beef Feast. Its label says: protein 11% (min), fat 4% (min), fiber 1.5% (max), moisture 78% (max), ash 3.25% (max).8
- Carbs as fed: 100 − 11 − 4 − 1.5 − 78 − 3.25 = 2.25%.
- Dry matter: 100 − 78 = 22%.
- Carbs once the water is out: 2.25 ÷ 22 × 100 = 10.2%.
